Merlot: elegance, softness, and Italian identity

The Merlot collection from Italian Wine Selection brings together labels that interpret one of the most beloved international grape varieties in an Italian key, with styles ranging from greater expressive immediacy to more structured and profound versions. In this selection, wines from different territories coexist, capable of telling the story of Merlot through nuances of ripe fruit, sweet spices, velvety texture, and good aging potential.

The presence of wineries such as Ornellaia, Antinori, Argiano, Avignonesi, and Ca' Marcanda - Gaja highlights the level and variety of the offering, with interpretations that enhance Merlot in blends and in purity, often in contexts of great prestige.

The profile of Merlot in Italian wines

Merlot is appreciated for its round character, soft structure, and elegant drinkability. In Italy, it finds very different expressions depending on the territory: in the warmer and more suitable areas, it emerges with greater fruity richness, while in cooler contexts, it can develop aromatic precision, balance, and a finer taste structure. For this reason, the collection includes labels suitable for those seeking an immediate and harmonious red, as well as for those desiring bottles for tasting and aging.

Territories, styles, and denominations in selection

Among the most represented areas are Tuscany, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sicily, and other regions where Merlot has found an authoritative expression. The selection includes wines such as Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC Superiore, Guidalberto IGT Toscana, La Ricolma 2022 Merlot Toscana IGT San Giusto Rentennano, Le Stanze del Poliziano, Messorio, and Villa Gresti, along with strongly personal interpretations like Merlot RADIKON or Merlot Sito dell'Ulmo Sicilia DOC. The result is a broad panorama capable of uniting finesse, complexity, and territorial identity.

When to choose a Merlot

A great Merlot is an ideal choice for important dinners, tasting moments, and pairings with flavorful cuisine. It pairs well with red meats, roasts, game, baked preparations, and dishes rich in structure. The softer and more immediate versions are also well-suited to cured meats, pasta with ragù, and aged cheeses; the more complex and long-lived versions can express themselves best after a brief passage in a decanter.

FAQs

What characteristics does an Italian Merlot wine have?
Italian Merlot is often recognizable for its softness, fruity profile, and velvety texture. Depending on the territory, it can be richer and more enveloping or fresher and finer, but it almost always maintains balance and pleasantness on the palate. In the more important versions, notes of ripe fruit, sweet spices, and a structure capable of supporting aging emerge. It is a versatile grape variety, highly appreciated both in purity and in high-level blends.
What dishes pair best with Merlot?
Merlot pairs well with dishes of good structure but not excessively aggressive. It is a natural choice with red meats, roasts, braises, game, and baked preparations. The softer versions can also accompany rich first courses, such as pasta with ragù, and aged cheeses. The more complex and deep Merlots, on the other hand, are ideal for important dinners and dedicated tastings, as they offer intensity, balance, and a pleasant persistence on the palate.
Does the Merlot collection include only pure wines?
No, the Merlot collection includes both pure wines and labels where Merlot is blended with other grape varieties, according to the stylistic choices of the individual wineries. This makes the selection very interesting because it allows for comparisons of different interpretations of the same grape variety: from the more direct and territorial versions to the more complex and long-aged ones. It is a collection designed for those who want to explore the versatility of Merlot in Italian wine.
