Description
Vie Cave 2023 Malbec Maremma Toscana IGT by Fattoria Aldobrandesca
Vie Cave 2023 is a Tuscan red with a bold and contemporary profile, crafted by Fattoria Aldobrandesca, a estate owned by the Marchesi Antinori family in southern Maremma. Made from pure Malbec, it expresses the dynamic Maremma Toscana IGT designation with personality, combining aromatic intensity, tasting softness, and a recognizable Mediterranean touch. It’s a wine designed for those looking for a characterful red, elegant yet also substantial at the table.
Territory and wine style
The Sovana area, in Grosseto, offers a context suited for wines with a deep and fragrant character, where the Maremma landscape helps define a rich and measured style. Vie Cave 2023 is born as a dry red wine with structure, featuring an international interpretation of the grape variety while firmly rooted in the Tuscan territory. Aging in French barriques adds complexity and roundness, without overshadowing the fruity component that remains the star.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it presents an intense ruby red color with violet reflections. On the nose, ripe red fruits, blackberries, and plums emerge, accompanied by spicy nuances and hints of vanilla, cocoa, and leather. On the palate, it is soft, round, and enveloping, with elegant and well-integrated tannins, good structure, and a long, savory, and balsamic finish. The sip maintains balance and depth, offering a pleasant sensation of fullness without being heavy.
Recommended pairings
Vie Cave 2022 pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, beef tagliata, ribs, and gourmet burgers. It’s also ideal with heartier Tuscan cuisine, such as stewed wild boar, Cinta Senese stew, and pici with intense sauces. Excellent with aged pecorino cheeses and washed-rind cheeses, thanks to the combination of substance, softness, and aromatic persistence.
Serving temperature
The ideal temperature to serve Vie Cave 2023 is between 16 and 18°C. Serving in a large red wine glass enhances its aromatic expression. If opened a little in advance, it can gain further harmony, especially in the early years of bottle evolution.
Why buy it
This wine represents an interesting choice for those looking to purchase an original Tuscan red, backed by the solidity of a great name like Antinori and the territorial identity of Maremma. Vie Cave 2023 combines quality, versatility, and personality, making it suitable for both an important dinner and a more casual consumption. It’s a bottle that stands out for its balance, rich taste, and overall pleasantness.

Climate
The 2023 vintage was characterized by a rather mild winter, marked by scattered rainfall and temperatures above the seasonal average. To avoid possible risks due to frost during late spring, pruning operations were postponed, resulting in a vegetative delay of about 10 days. An unusual spring, starting with cool weather and abundant rainfall, slowed the growth of the plants. The rise in temperatures during May and the abundant water availability in the soil recovered the initial delay, favoring regular budding and excellent flowering and fruit set of the Malbec variety. A hot and typically Mediterranean summer, with rare rainfall, ensured a slow and progressive ripening of the grapes, resulting in healthy, fragrant clusters characterized by crunchy berries. The harvest was carried out by hand, in several rounds, starting at the end of September and continuing until October. The grapes at the time of harvest were perfectly ripe and with excellent varietal expression.
Winemaking
The freshly harvested grapes, destemmed and softly pressed, were transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 30 °C. Maceration, managed delicately to allow for controlled extraction of sweet tannins, lasted about a week. The wine was then transferred to French oak barriques, where it matured for about 7 months, after which it was bottled in January 2025.
Historical Data
Fattoria Aldobrandesca is located in Tuscany, in the heart of southern Maremma, at the center of what is known as the “Etruscan Tuff Area.” This wine is dedicated to the “vie cave,” Etruscan roads carved into tuff that deeply traverse the territory of Sovana, just like the vineyards of the estate, revealing ancient pathways. Vie Cave is born from a careful geological and enological research aimed at enhancing the potential of a new grape variety for the Italian landscape, Malbec, a French-origin grape that has found in the “volcanic” Maremma an ideal terroir.
Tasting Notes
Vie Cave 2023 presents an intense ruby red color, almost impenetrable. On the nose, it is engaging and intense: the typical notes of ripe red fruit like blueberry and blackberry harmoniously blend with spicy sensations of bitter cocoa and licorice. On the palate, it is rich, enveloping, with silky tannins. Persistent in the finish, characterized by notes of bitter chocolate and mint.
