Description
Matarocchio 2022 Bolgheri Superiore DOC Antinori
Matarocchio 2022 Bolgheri Superiore DOC Antinori is a wine of great personality, born at Tenuta Guado al Tasso, in the heart of the Bolgheri coast. It expresses a refined and authoritative style, capable of combining intensity, aromatic depth, and balance. The signature of Antinori enhances one of the most prestigious denominations in Tuscany with a label designed for those seeking an important, elegant red destined to evolve over time.
Territory and wine style
The Bolgheri Superiore DOC stands out for its connection to a unique territory, where the sea helps to mitigate the climate and promote harmonious ripening of the grapes. In this context, Matarocchio 2022 best interprets the vocation of the area, with a rich yet never excessive profile. The vintage favored concentration and aromatic precision, while the proximity to the sea helped preserve freshness and balance. The result is a structured wine, modern in style and consistent with the identity of Bolgheri.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it presents an intense and deep color, a prelude to a complex and refined bouquet. On the nose, hints of juniper, bay leaf, marasca, and licorice emerge, with a clear and composed aromatic weave. The sip is elegant, full, and precise, supported by extraordinarily smooth and silky tannins. The taste component shows character and definition, without overripe notes, with a harmonious finish that suggests excellent aging potential in the bottle.
Recommended pairings
This red pairs wonderfully with structured and flavorful dishes, such as braised meats, beef fillets, game birds, lamb chops, and large roasts. It also works well with rich and succulent Tuscan cuisine preparations, as well as with long-aged cheeses. Matarocchio 2022 Bolgheri Superiore DOC Antinori naturally accompanies important moments at the table and enhances menus with a strong gastronomic imprint.
Serving temperature
The ideal serving temperature for Matarocchio 2022 Bolgheri Superiore DOC Antinori is between 16 and 18 °C. To best appreciate its aromatic profile, it is advisable to uncork the bottle a little in advance of serving, to promote oxygenation and the opening of the aromas. In more formal tasting vintages or contexts, it can also benefit from a brief decanting.
Why buy it
Choosing Matarocchio 2022 Bolgheri Superiore DOC Antinori means opting for a high-end wine, capable of combining prestige, territorial identity, and great expressive finesse. It is a bottle designed for enthusiasts of great Tuscan reds, perfect for both a collection cellar and a special dinner. Climate
The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by scarce
precipitation from the final phases of winter through much of
the summer. These climatic conditions led to an
advance in both budding and all other phenological phases:
flowering, fruit set, and veraison. From mid-August,
the arrival of some rain was providential for the crucial
ripening period. This climatic trend has indeed
ensured a perfect health status of the grapes, but has also
favored a reduction in vegetative development and the
size of the grapes. Thanks to the August rains, the grapes at
the time of harvest presented a good
balance of sugars, acidity, and fruit maturity, along with a
distinct varietal aromaticity. The Cabernet Franc of Matarocchio
was harvested between September 14 and 21.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-picked and, after careful selection berry by berry, a soft
crushing was performed. The alcoholic fermentation and the subsequent maceration took place in stainless steel tanks for 25
days at a controlled temperature of 28 °C. The wine was then transferred to French oak barriques
of second and third passage, where it completed the malolactic fermentation. It then matured for
18 months in new French oak barriques; after careful tastings, the best barrels were blended to create
Matarocchio. The wine then rested for over a year in bottle before its market release.
Historical Data
Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located in the small and prestigious DOC of Bolgheri, on the coast of Alta Maremma, about a
hundred kilometers southwest of Florence. This denomination has a relatively short history (it was established in
1995) but boasts an international fame as a new reference point in the global wine scene.
Tenuta Guado al Tasso extends over an area of about 320 hectares planted with vineyards, in a splendid plain
surrounded by hills known as the “Bolgheri amphitheater” for its particular conformation. The vineyards of
Guado al Tasso are predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc,
Petit Verdot, and Vermentino grapes. There is also a small presence of Grenache, Petit Verdot, Viognier, and Sémillon. They enjoy a
mild climate due to the nearby sea: the constant breezes mitigate summer heat and winter harshness,
clear the sky, and maintain a high level of sunlight exposure.
Tasting Notes
Matarocchio 2022 presents an intense ruby red color. On the nose, it is seductive, with spicy notes of white pepper
and pleasant hints of sage, juniper, tobacco leaves, black currant, and violet. On the palate, it is
enveloping, intense, and deep; the sweet and silky tannins accompany an elegant sip, with great balance and
persistence. A vintage that is already enjoyable from the start and at the same time has excellent aging potential.
