Description
Massetino 2023 Toscana IGT Masseto
Massetino 2023
Toscana IGT
91% Merlot
9% Cabernet Franc
The 2023 vintage was challenging, where nature showed its power while also nurturing the highlights of our vines' biological cycle. The winter was mild with temperatures and slightly above-average rainfall, which favored early plant growth. Spring, on the other hand, brought abundant rainfall, which replenished water reserves definitely useful for summer, but at the same time kept our team busy in the vineyard with precise selection and sorting tasks. Summer was characterized by high temperatures around 35°C, though without reaching extreme peaks. This situation, combined with the spring water reserves, led to a gradual and consistent ripening of the grapes, achieving excellent concentrations. The rains at the end of August and the cool nights of September favored the development of aromatic complexity, preserving the wine's acidity, enhancing the balance between phenolic and technological maturity.
Vinification and aging
The grapes were hand-harvested in 15 kg crates. After destemming and a light crushing, the grapes
were transferred by gravity into cement tanks, without any pumping. Each individual parcel of the
vineyard was vinified separately. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at temperatures around 25-28°C, with two or three pump-overs per day, as needed. The total time in the tanks varied from 21 to 25 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques, with 50% new oak. After the first 12 months of aging, the wine was blended and rested in cement tanks for about 4 months before bottling.
Tasting notes
Massetino 2023 offers excellent pleasure right from the aroma. Fresh and intoxicating red fruit accompanies the first sip and reveals the character of this vintage. The concentration is evident on the palate, where Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend seamlessly. Massetino presents a definition that reflects the seasonality of the vintage: juiciness and length persist throughout the tasting, finishing with a slight savory note.
Serving temperature
Serve Massetino 2023 Toscana IGT at a temperature of 16-18°C to best appreciate its aromatic depth, balance, and tannic structure. If possible, it is advisable to open the bottle a little in advance to promote oxygenation and a better expression of the bouquet. There's no need for complex gestures: just attentive service to enhance its evolution in the glass.
