Verdicchio
Verdicchio for sale online at Italian Wine Selectio
Verdicchio is a grape variety produced from white grapes found mainly in the Marche region, in the hills between Jesi and Matelica, and its name comes from the coloring of its berries. Recent studies have likened it to Trebbiano verde or Verdicchio laziale, but the latter's higher productivity is not matched by the quality of Verdicchio from the Marche. Ninety percent of the production of this white wine is concentrated mainly in the hills surrounding Jesi and in the province of Macerata, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi compared to Verdicchio di Matelica is preferred in terms of body but yields something from an olfactory point of view. Over the years, attempts have been made to grow Verdicchio in a different terroir, Umbria and Abruzzo, with unsatisfactory results. In 2021 Verdicchio was awarded the title of best white wine in the world. Its adaptation to vinification in steel and wood gives it great potential in the production of long-lived wines, but credit also goes to its structure, the acidity of its grapes and its high alcohol content. Verdicchio is a very fresh wine with a complex aromatic profile and an unmistakable almondy and savory finish, which is usually vinified on its own but also has a sparkling variant with the classic method, passita or late harvests.
